Happiness and Joy

I read this in a short story from boundless.org, a cool Christian webzine for the college crowd. It sums up beautifully what God is teaching me these days. It's a hard lesson to learn, and I know I'll be learning it for the rest of my life.

"Happiness and joy are two different things. Happiness is when the sun shines and nobody's done you wrong. It just means that life's going your way today, and tomorrow you could be dead!...Joy is when everything is a mess and I cry from a broken heart. But through my tears I say, 'God is good and Jesus saved me and heaven is waiting.' It's a lot harder than happy. But it's also a lot more worth having."

Paul wrote from prison in Philippians 3:8-11

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

That is my prayer today. That I may gain Christ and be found in him.
